I'm new to Paypal and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I need to add a very basic e-commerce functionality to a site:

- the user can purchase 1 of 5 products (no shopping cart required)
- on returning to the website after payment has been confirmed, the user's status is updated depending on which product he or she purchased

I've set up ExpressButtons in Paypal, but I'm not sure how to go about getting the variables back from Paypal that will allow me to update the user's status - I'm not even sure if Expressbuttons are the right way to go, so I'd appreciate any help I could get on this.

I'm not going to go into an extended detail overview of how to do it, but you need to look up PayPal's IPN service. Basically, when a customer makes a purchase the PayPal service sends out a post request with all of the information to a page of your choosing. Upon receipt, you can choose to do whatever you want with that information.

I've been through the site and set up a sandbox etc, but to be honest I was pretty confused as to which merchant service I should be looking at so confirming that for me is more helpful than you realise!

Business account is all you need for PayPal IPN, it will work great!
