Try adding a captcha or security question to your forum registration. There's lots of premade, downloadable scripts at PhpBBHacks.

update your phpbb to 2.0.23 or 3.0.1 then install the (RAC) MOD

If possible change your forum script to smf or discuz. phpBB's exploites are more than those two.

I would honestly suggest Mybb if he decides to switch. Phpbb is the worst forum software in addition to SMF that you can use.

Mybb has quality about equal to commercial boards such as Vbulletin and IPB, plugins are extremely easy to install, just upload and activate, very few plugins require core file changes.

Mybb has some excellent themes as well.

Also the upcoming 1.4 release of Mybb is going to rock, nice admin panel and features to boot.

Using Mybb and a combination of Captcha and a No Spam verification plugin, spam/bots will essentially become a thing of the past.

I use this system on my Mybb board and no bots/spammers have gotten through.

Okay which one should I change to and keep the original post, must be customizable to look like the rest of my site, must be secure, and have alot of free addons available.
