Hello.

I'm a java programmer, and also programed c++ in the past. I'm a bit rusty now because in my actual job the closest thing to programing is writing simple batch scripts.

I have a site not made by me, and also play around with open source content manager sites, etc. I open a .php file and I understand a few things, but I can't really program in PHP.

Do you now of some free online course, that teaches intermediate PHP programing? I mean, a good one.

Thank you!

I've always liked this site: http://www.tizag.com/phpT/

Also the main PHP website has lots of useful code snippets which can be helpful.

I would recommend trying http://www.phpvideotutorials.com/

Once you get the basics, just play around with it. That's how I learnt PHP. After that, just research individual functions on PHP.net and/or Google when you need them.

PHP is actually incredibly easy to learn - there's lots of information online about it.

I would learn a PHP MVC framework. A lot of the code is there for you to learn from and there are already great examples within the frameworks. Plus, you're probably going to want to develop a site using a MVC framework anyways. Right?

What about a GUI for programming PHP?

For Java, I really liked the Eclipse, or the similar JBuilder. These have auto-complete features while you're coding and it's very helpful.

Is there any software you would recommend to PHP developing?

I wouldn't recommend a framework until you understand the basic functions and features of php, but once you get past that, I would recommend Code Igniter of phpCake. I wrote a little post on php frameworks that lists a few.

I would recommend you check out php.net and phpBuilder.com

Learn javascript first, the syntax is very similar to php. javascript is single threaded and has limited functions compared to php, kinda like better to play with firecrackers before you start on 500lb bombs. javascript will give you a good base to work from.

I just use Dreamweaver. It doesn't auto-complete, but it knows all of the important functions, and when you type them, it will remind you what the proper placement of the arguments are, which is very useful.

I've started with an official PHP manual:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/

I believe that will be OK as a starting point. And use Google

To start off, I read a book on it so I could understand the basics, then did some tutorials, then tried to create my own programs, at the same time, asking loads of questions on various PHP forums to help educate and sort out problems I had.

You fit my profile exactly. I have a degree in CS and didn't have a clue how to program in php after I graduated from college.

What I did to teach myself PHP was to modify other people's scripts to what I wanted for my websites. After I had modified enough I eventually caught on to how other people did it and copied their techniques and skills. I can now fully make a coded PHP website.

Working on other peoples' code is a very important means of learning. Also, working with other developers in general is very important.
