Programming Question from beginner

Greetings to all. I have pretty good knowledge of HTML and can build an "ok" website, but there is one aspect of building a website I do not know and that's the ability to give an owner of a website the ability to change certain pieces of text or pictures on their site from a simple control panel. Is there an easy application to install (server side) to allow this? Or, is there a simple PHP script to allow this? Example of what I need to do: I have a webpage with a paragraph on it. I want to be able to change that paragraph on a daily basis, without having to go into the html code, but to be able to do it from another secure webage (control panel). Any help or guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

I think you'll need a CMS (content management system). Try to see some demo in www.opensourcecms.com

Sounds like WordPress would be ideal for your needs - wordpress.org
If you are working as a freelancer, then you can modiy only the design of the theme page. And getting knowledge in the wordpress customizations would bring you even more benefits since it's very common people ask for experienced wordpress designers/programmers.

Or you could always programm a simple php file to connect and read(display)/write(edit) some bits of the site if you like. The problem then would be, to have some reliable login, so your client could log in and access the edit form, whatsoever.
But if you're more into the design/html part of it, and your customer wouldn't mind the bloggy layout, then you may really consider learning tweaking wordpress, as it's really wide spread nowadays.

If your really interested in learning the inner workings of PHP you can create your own Content Management System however, its involved. I recommend Wordpress or Joomla.
