You might try buying a book on the subject, but a simple place to start to learn the basics is: http://www.w3schools.com/php/php_intro.asp . However, I would say that w3schools is not a great place to get general programming theory/knowledge, though it may be a good reference to start out with.

I hate to be a dick, but don't you need to know how to program in PHP/MySQL before you agree to do a job in it?

Take a look at http://www.php.net/

Sorry, but i am not going to be nice about this, if you dont know it dont agree to jobs which involve it, i can accept on the job learning we all do it but you should have a reasonable knowledge of it to begin with!!!!

I think this almost hit the nail on the head. You would not agree to build a house if you had no idea how to build a house.

Heh I think were being a bit mean. But let me get you started.

1. You need to pay someone to host a development server for you, these tend to come in at about a few hundred pounds a month (I suggest http://fdcservers.net/), it seems expensive but it's worth it.
2. You need notepad to code on, it's the best our their when it comes to any type of code to be honest.
3. A Private FTP, this is where you send your files on a USB stick to the web host via the Royal Mail and they put it on your development server so you can see if the changes worked or not.
