Best way to learn is to practice and set yourself a small goal. For instance, a small goal you may have it the beginning is to code a simple calculator where to user enters their calculation into a form, and when they submit the form it gives them the answer. I know its simple, but its things like this that help you understand the basics.

i found w3schools very good and had 15/20 correct in the quiz after a little revision, which aint bad for 1st go, dont think anyhow.

The way I learnt php was very simple. Try to build small applications and use the search engines to find how that could be done using php. Over a period of time, you'll get reasonably proficient

i am also a beginner and just started studying php for not long time and w3schools and php.net are good so far.
