The Eclipse Foundation has recently released a new version, code named Galileo. I've been using Eclipse for years as a J2EE developer and liked it quite a bit. I don't do PHP but, I figure a lot of the folks here might want to give it a try.

There is a release for PHP developers:
http://eclipse.org/downloads/package...opers/galileor
It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

They are also giving away shirts for the best reviews:
http://www.eclipse.org/galileo/blogathon/guidelines.php

Eclipse is free and open source, so, there's no cost in giving it a run. Only issue, you will need the latest version of Java installed to run it.

I would be interested in how well it works out so, if you give it a run, let me know.
If you need a place to host you review, let me know or find my offer in the marketplace.

I looked at Eclipse twice over the last 3 years and each time I installed it, I got random crashes and other problems, so I switched back to Crimson Editor and then to Notepad++ as they appeared much more stable.

How does the stability rate now?

I just closed a session that was open and used for the last 13 hours.
I never had stability problems with Eclipse.

There is another plugin to supprt PHP code in eclipse, http://www.phpeclipse.de, that I was using when I was developping in PHP.

Now that I play with python, I use pyDev (http://www.fabioz.com/pydev/) and am more hooked than ever to Eclipse.
If only there would be a vb.net plugin for it, I could ditch VS 2008 away.
If you are looking for a piece of worthless jnk, then Visual Studio is the perfect fit.
That one crash about 1 time every 30 minutes... Talk about stability issues.

Thanks. When I get some free time, I'll give Eclipse another shot and report back on my results.

I use it almost daily (Java development) it's been pretty stable for me the last couple of years. The latest appears to be the most stable.

However, since I don't do PHP, I can't say the effect of the PHP dev tools within it.

There is still some general quirkiness in Eclipse but, for me, it's still much better than the commercial tools out there (ironically, it's better than Rational Application Developer, which is very expensive and built on top of Eclipse). If I found a better commercial tool, I would buy it.
