sometimes you can, sometimes you can't. It really depends.
i've spent COUNTLESS HOURS searching for free scripts (that actually functioned 100%), and these are few and far between.
There are also instances in which you purchase a script from a developer and about 10% of the site's code is either buggy, or non-functional.
basically, if you want something that's going to work awesomely for you- it's best to hire someone to do it for you, unless there is a huge open source movement for the type of script you're trying to procure with an awesome community looking to improve it on a constant basis (security fixes, bug fixes, etc.)
Honestly, haven't seen many search engine communities around. But imagine they must be out there. Then again, expect to spend about four hours (maybe more) looking for them, AND then testing their scripts out to see how well they work or not.
