The browser doesn't interpret PHP. Only the server can do that.

Ok, then why can I not view the PHP include locally?

The code is just this: <?php include("nav.php"); ?>

Are you saying you can't see that code, or you can't see the content inside the file "nav.php"?

The content contained in the php include file is not visible on the layout when viewed locally on FireFox, but I can see it when I look at it hosted on my server. I tried checking in Safari, but evidently Safari can't read php files locally at all, I can just view the code.

Attached is a screenshot of what I'm seeing locally. The nav and recent posts is missing entirely (they are php includes).

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to look at here Stephanie, viewing PHP on your home machine? As Abel already mentioned, PHP is only interpreted on the Server side, so any PHP code you write can't be interpreted locally by browsers like FF or Safari.

If you're trying to view your PHP locally, you can always look into installing something like WAMP onto your computer (if you're using windows):

That's why I didn't understand and wasn't sure if it was something I was doing. Have to speak laymen for those of us who aren't fluent in PHP. Thanks!
