Dear everybody. I have a hosting and I want to make youtube clone. Everything works, but some php options. I have max_input_time on 30 and max_execution_time 60 so I can't upload anything serious. I tried with php.ini, but it does not work, also tied with .htaccess no go. Only option left for me (that I know) is to install a personal copy of php. I found tutorial here http://thousandrobots.com/blog/archi...stall-php-5-i/ but for that I need SSH access, unfortunately my host blocked my SSH....... Any ideas?

Most hosting companies, even the most basic ones out there, already have PHP installed.

And most hosting companies i've ever seen want you to upgrade (usually to a dedicated server account) before getting access SSH and obtaining the ability to install other devices like FFMPEG, LAME MP3 encoder, and flv conversion tools, etc.

Shared hosting is simply shared hosting. If you had the ability to control resource sensitive settings or software then your account would be at the mercy of another user with equal privileges (As everyone is the same). Shared hosting has a lot of Pros: cheaper, usually alot of comes with lots of disk and bandwidth space, minimal technical expertise required and all-in-one hosting of email, website, etc. However the drawbacks of those Pros are: lack of access, inability to minipulate server wide settings, etc.

If you want to do that you will have to get a dedicated server or comparable. Check out VPS servers... they are the next step between shared and dedicated and are cost efficient and comes with root SSH.

If your host does not allow to modify PHP settings using php flags, I'm afraid there is no solution in this case. However, you can always try asking your hosting provider to increase PHP limits a little.
