From articles I have read, though i'm sure this isn't always the case...

your interviewer will want to make sure that you can do a few things properly:

1) write simple, clean, efficient code. By "simple" I mean, code that can be easily read by other programmers later on. Code that others don't have to spend several hours trying to pick apart to figure out how it/the software runs.

2) problem solving skills. They want to make sure that you can code what it is they're looking for you to do, and achieve some critical problem solving on your own part to achieve something they want done, without having to tell you how to do every single little thing.

Keep in mind what kind of job you are interviewing for.

For example, if it is writing new code then make sure to bring a portfolio of very well documented and easy to read as Lashtal pointed out.

Also, best practices such as separation of php code and html code (i.e. Smarty templates) or from a security aspect you want to show that you utilize the safest coding practices to ensure stability and prevention of exploits.


If you have other valuable skills with Java, Ajax, MySQL (or other databases) be sure to highlight those as well. A skillset is more valuable than being a brilliant coder in one aspect.
