Logic Behind a Thumbs Up/Down Voting System?

I'm planning to create a voting page, where users can vote on different ideas or suggestions. I think for my situation it will be best to use a Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down type voting system. Can anyone explain how these work? Do they use division, average, etc?

Thanks

From what i know a voting system like that doesn't use any math... simply displays a stat. If user hits Up, the stat is updated by adding one unit, if hits Down then stat is substracted by one.

When I was at school adding or subtracting WAS using maths.

Normally a "thumbs up" would add an arbitrary figure to the "for" score, nominally 1 but you could use any incremental value that you wish, and "thumbs down" add the same value to the "against" scrore.
You then compare the "for" to the "against" and see which is higher.

You know, I can't quite believe that I just explained

1+1 = 2

and

1+1+1 = 3

therefore 3 is more than 2
