Seems like someone was able to use the massive resources of Amazon cloud to crack a SHA-1 within 50minutes for cost of about 2 bucks.

Not sure whether it was "salted" or not, but even so it's scary.

More reason to be careful especially about wireless data transfer.

This isn't anything new (see http://tinsology.net/2010/08/do-we-n...ger-passwords/ ). The researcher the article refers to was able to 'break' the encryption for 1-6 character passwords. This is not the same as generating a collision. As far as I know it still isn't possible to find a collision for any generic password hashed with sha1 in the same amount of time.
