Hey guys,

I was wondering if there is any way to pull up reliable statistics on how many PHP developers there are and how many sites utilize PHP? Also, if there is a way to get real hard stats on the use of any given programming languages like C++, Java, HTML, etc.

I ask this for research purposes.

Also, I wanted to segment out PHP (as well as other popular programming language) users, in particular beginners. One way I was thinking to segment out and get a feel for how many beginner PHP developers there are was by tracking book sales of 'PHP for beginners' type books. I know this one isn't a technical question, but is there a way to look up book sales numbers?

Thanks for any help you guys can provide!

Nope. apart from the fact that every single page on every website that ever existed uses HTML.

Not unless you can get every book publisher/wholesaler/retailer in the World to tell you.

The Nielsen Company does produce such data but you'd have to pay (lots) for it, unless they'd help a bona fide student, or you might find some parts on the web. For example, but completely off topic, the Daily Telegraph has just used Nielsen data to discuss top-selling writers (and Jeremy Clarkson). See http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/b...he-decade.html
