I am interested in creating a site using PHP, can anyone recommend a site or books that will start from the basics about how to start one from scratch.

This I found to be a good book that takes your through the steps of setting up your computer, basics of php and how to create a database.

The very fast and useful way to know about html is watch the teaching video frequency(just search it in google), and you will have the very comprehasive basic in php. And then you can get further knowledge in professional book.w3schools.com is good, but it just one dictionay to me, i think the book is still the very excellent learning resource because it is more detailed.

I learned PHP from scratch from those two resources.

You might also want to check http://www.w3schools.com/php/php_mysql_intro.asp since PHP and MySQL are closely linked if you are planning in a database driven website.
