I will be implementing SSL on a website in a few weeks. My webhost is godaddy, and I will be buying the certificate from godaddy. I understand that godaddy isn't the best provider, but fiscal restraints have limited my options to godaddy. This is my first implementation of SSL, so your expert guidance is sincerely appreciated.

Here are my questions:
1. Has anyone else had experience installing a godaddy certificate on a godaddy shared hosting account? Is it difficult to install, or do they install it for you?

2. Once the certificate is installed, is it just a matter of accessing the site using https in the url to use the encryption?

3. Is there anything I need to do to pages that will be encrypted to ensure proper function and security?

4. Are there any other tidbits I should be aware of before, during, and after implementation?

I am not averse to reading and learning. However, this subject is fairly complex and very important. So, I want to make sure I know as much as possible about it before I get started.

Thank you.

A SSL certificate require a dedicated IP, so installing one on a GoDaddy shared hosting account is unlikely to be a realistic option.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your reply.

I called GoDaddy to verify, and the SSL certificate comes with a dedicated IP address and it will work on a shared hosting. They install it for me, too.

Is there anything else I should know about implementing SSL in the php programming? The guy at GoDaddy said I just have to change my links to point to the https.

As always, I appreciate your help.

if you pay and they install it and POW it all works, Then NO theres nothing else to do other than change your links to https.

PHP works the same.

Getting a Godaddy SSL cert on a Godaddy hosting account is effortless! For pages using https, it is easy to have other html includes (i.e.css, js) to use a relative link or make sure it uses https also.

Oh yes it will "work" in a shared environment, however what they may NOT have told you is that any other websites on that server that are mapped to the IP will ALSO respond to HTTPS AND display the pages along with a certificate error of "This certificate was not produced for this domain etc etc".
