I am going to buy a PHP script which is a clone of a relatively famous web site.

It there any documents that need to get from the seller to be able to use it legally?

I want to make sure that I will not be sued by someone after I set up my web site

You are buying a counterfeit copy of something, in the full knowledge that it is a counterfeit.
Should the owners of the original script take action against you, nothing at all is going to give you protection.

The argument of "derivitive works" does not apply here.

Clone means that there is similar functionality... you can find dozens (if not hundreds) clones of Groupon, Facebook etc available as PHP scripts for $20 or $50. It doesn't mean that they are counterfeit or stolen. Some companies developed them and now sell as scripts or with additional customization according to clients requirements.

Clone aslo means "copy", and nobody said anything about stolen.

No matter how much you try and squirm out of it. If you thought it was all open and above board you would not have asked the question.
