If you want to run your own IRC server instead of having a channel on somebody elses server, you will need a shell account. I reccomend sh3lls.net.

You will then need to install an IRC daemon such as UnrealIRCD

You sign up for a shell account much like you would for any web hosting account. You'll get SSH (command line) access to your account. Then it's a matter of installing the software you want.

running an IRC server is a lot of work and is NOT for the faint of heart. If you've never used the Unix command line or are not up to the challenge of learning, then your might be better off sticking with a channel on someone elses server.

The first thing you'll want to do is download UnrealIRCd (www.unrealircd.com) and thourghly read the documentation. Find out what you need, google around for some IRCd tutorials and when your ready, purchase a shell account and start setting up shop.

I agree with Anacrusis here, it's definitely not for the faint of heart. Before you go and get yourself an account with shell access (if you have a dedi server you'll probably have full access to it, no need to buy one) it's probably worth experimenting on a computer you have laying around.

All in all, it's probably better to simply host your channel on one of the free IRC networks.
