I am a true NIX freak but lately I have got my hands on mono and started to hack away with c# and .NET.
I like it but feel its a little overkill for me (every button an object) especially since my main role is sysAdmin/ Web mastering/ developing.
I cannot help but wonder if the .NET Framework is going to be just another Windows craze that will be phased out and replaced by something new in several years time.
However the question is::
Is PHP here to stay

I think it's here to stay. It's free, very fast, very popular and beginner-friendly. Those four points alone will make it hard to kill.
While there are other technologies, like .NET, suited best for an enterprise environment, I think PHP will still be the "average" for a few years to come at least.

I think PHP is here to stay. At least for quite a while. I think the biggest reason is that anyone can use it. It is open source and fairly straigtforward. It can accomplish a lot too. I think many people also may want to "rebel" by avoiding using microsoft products!

I have to agree 100% with that post. With the speed of PHP, and the small learning curve from static HTML to PHP, it's definately here to stay.

Since it is growing exponentially would say that is here for a very long time. At least I hope it stays since I am finally getting a good handle on it. But if something better came out I won't argue with that either.

i think that by reading more about PHP5 people would agree that php is here to stay ... i think that for a couple more years from now php will be there, and getting better and better.
from the platform point of view i doubt it there will anything better for nix any time soon. windows ... that's a rather difficult subject.
from the developer point of view, php has got a LOT more advantages than any other.
IMHO. feel free to argue and prove me wrong.

Php is definatly not going anywhere, although I don't think that it's really any better than the .NET framework. PHP is great and can do a lot of things, the library of functions is fantastic however the .NET framework provides a much bigger library (which may seem like overkill at first but after learning it better I feel all the namespaces are neccesary to speed development.) it also provides a better IDE than I have ever seen for any web development platform. The ease of creating SOAP objects with .NET is also about a million times quicker and easier than with nuSOAP.
All in all they both have their strengths and weaknesses. I use both for different tasks. I think they are both here to stay for the long run. .NET especially as you will see when longhorn is released (all windows development will probably move to .NET at that point).

PHP will probably stick around, but those of us serious about developing enterprise web applications will follow the latest advanced technologies from the world leaders in the field, i.e. .NET. Hey, it's where the money is... (just got a 20% raise )

I think PHP is definitely here to stay. Developers like Minaki who are looking for more money may switch over to .NET, but the cost of running ASP on Windows servers is alot more for customers than running PHP scripts on Linux/Unix boxes. That is what Microsoft just doesn't get, that they charge so much for their server packages that even the biggest webhosting companies have to charge more money to their customers, thus making Linux and PHP that much more attractive. As far as I am concerned Microsoft is shooting themselves in the foot, and I am going to stay with PHP as long as it is around.
Long live open source!

P.S. I would argue with Minaki that Microsoft is the "world leader in enterprise software." If that is the case why do many of the big boys use JSP, which is definitely not a Micro$oft creation.

I don't think anything on the web is bigger than PHP.
.net is not even close to as big.
Look at this forum (and 95% of other forums). They are all using PHP.

I think PHP is here to stay (it better!).
I've done a lot of coding in .NET as well as PHP, and I prefer PHP for many reasons (I'll leave them out of here to keep this on topic).
I think PHP is gonna get even better for enterprise development once PHP5 gets more widespread support and use. The OOP model has been completely revamped, and brings it a lot closer to 'real' OO programming. It's the push PHP needed to rise up even more.
As far as IDE's go cptnwinky, have you tried using Zend Development Environment? It's almost as complete as Visual Studio is, and since I've started using it, my productivity has soared miles higher than it was previously. Give it a try.

When I am looking for developers for projects, there are way more people trained in PHP than anything else, which means I mhave more people to choose from, as well as more competitive pricing.

I did try zend studio and I did not like it at all it felt too clunky to me, plus it really did not feel like anything more than a glorified text editor.

I don't know how long it's been used/available, but I know it's something I will be using for as long as I can. It was surprisingly quick and easy to pick up, as well as being free. I only wish I'd learnt it earlier...

Heh, yeah that's me. I can live in hope, but I can also live knowing that when I'm going for a web development job with a top company that uses .NET, my ASP.NET skills on my CV will shine above the sea of the millions of PHP developers there are out there.
