Hi

My belated New Year resolution - I'm gonna teach my self php/mysql god dammit!

I run a fantasy football site (soccer) and spend too much time updating the league in Excel and saving as html. My aim is to have this database driven with log in areas for members to make team changes, an admin area to update scores etc, the league to update itself once weekly scores have been added etc etc etc.

An ambitious project considering I know nothing yet, have a young family and little time to myself!

I have purchased a couple of "How to..." books and have access to the server/mysqladmin etc. I know how to add mysql tables and fields but as yet don't know how to manipulate them using php pages.

My question:

Is there a site/resource that contains commonly used scripts/code that I can use to experiment with? For example, if I have a list of players in the database, a code routine that will display them on the web page etc.

You seem like a knowledgable and friendly bunch here so I will be tapping in to your knowledge as needed or until you get sick of me!

When I get experienced I will stay on and help others in my position - honest!

Thanks for looking and any comments will be gratefully received

David

I wouldn't really recommend looking at other scripts to try and learn, not at least until you've learnt a little more about PHP - otherwise you'll be looking at code that makes no sense!

As of yet, www.php.net won't be of any use to you until you've learnt what certain functions do in PHP etc.

I would recommend looking through www.sitepoint.com and in particular the articles The PHP Anthology and Build your own database driven website. From there, you'll pretty much have PHP snagged.

Also, once reading these, PHP.net becomes useful, as it has a builtin PHP manual that allows you to look up anything, with user comments! Check it out

I know you were asking for sites, but like you, I've recently started to learn php and MySQL, I would recommend a book published by Sams which gets you into the basics of PHP and MySQL, one of their learn in 24 hour books. I'm not at home to cjeck but I think it was this book "Sam's Teach Yourself Php, Mysql and Apache in 24 Hours"

This book has really helped me loads. I'm just trying to find a really good PHP book which I can now use for a reference, preferably not a teach yourself book.

definitely good advice, I still have a well worn copy of PHP & MySQL for Dummies book. Not all that great for more advanced users but it's kickass for learning the basics
