I totally give up. I will never figure out how to do on my site what I want. I just don't have the time. I work 2 jobs and am a fulltime single mom. Its not a possiblity. First of all, please tell me if what i want is a possiblity or am I making it up in my head... and secondly I am apperantly going to have to hire someone to make it for me. Please tell me what I am looking for when I search for someone to do it so I don't get screwed (and if you have a round about price on how much this would cost)

What I have:
I have mysql databases available for my site i beleive using linux server. I work off a mac personally, so anything that I do or use has to be mac compatible. Although my son does have a pc i suppose i could use , but i have 2 macs, so I want to stick to that. and if someone sets something up for me, I know i will have very little trouble maintaining or figureing it out.

What I want:
2 different things on my site. #1. one page that people can search for different things by different options. For example, a user can search sports, for a baseball team in whatevertown, illinois. Or they can search for zip. Or they can find any and all listings by zip.

so i guess the maintenace I would need on this is just entering the information on the backside of the site (thats what I do for my works website)

second:
I want to be able to add in events into a database. and then have it appear automatically on the home page. Is that even possible? I would think alls I need to do is have a html or javascript code, or whatever that i can keep in my home page right?

can anyone tell me if these things are a possiblity and will they cost me a million dollars?

e107 is a great Content Management System which I believe can do everything you need:

They should not cost you anything at all apart from your ISP costs.

If you have the information about the sports stored then creating your own little search engine is quite easy (he says).

Events are easy too, you just store them with a date and display them only on that date.

Of course you would be required to do some programming (which I assume is why you asked about a price).

Well if the data is intact and on the DB then actually coding your project would take perhaps an hour (definately not much more).

I have several search engine templates that vary in complexity that I could put together for you. Do you have your data already in the DB or is that to be done yet?

No, I don't have data in a database, because I dont even know where to start with that. Everytime I tried to create on useing the mysql I got myself more confussed. Entering stuff is easy. Its just finding something to enter it with.

I am the type of person that can't learn by reading. I get to fustrated. I need to be shown.

no. i want for people to be able to search for different activities by zip, city, etc.

so if someone wants to find a theatre camp in chicago, il, they can without it pulling up stuff Madison, wisconsin. (my site is chicagoland, so it extends partly into wisconsin and indiana)

i would also like to keep a calendar of events going. i used to do it manually, but between all my jobs, it was just to hard to keep it up.

I plan to try to write something that will make a calandar and show events on certain days that events are on. The one i'm going to try to make will have the user imput an event date and time though, it sounds like you dont want to have to input anything. If i get it runninng and it works how i am planning i'll send the code to you.

that would be great. I do want to input stuff. what i meant is, if i know something is happening on december 15, 2005, i want to be able to put that in somewhere NOW, but not have it show up till dec. 15 or december for that matter. doing it manually i have to wait till december to do it, and by then i could forget, or might not have time, etc.

i did look at that e107.org... but it was information overload from the very first page. i did register though

Well i'll make sure to work on it sometime this week, probably tomarrow during the day. Started my summer break so i have nothing to do

just a question, why would you not want an event to show up until the day the event is happening? I figure you would want people to know in advanced. The one i plan to write i was going to have show in advance but if you need it to show on just that day i'll try to rewrite it to do something like that, i dont think it would be too much more coding.

no no. advanced is ok and what i want. but were talking about hundreds of listings. i perfer people not have a december event show up right away until it gets closer to december unless they are looking for december events now.

How advanced are you working on for your code?

I think i am confussing myself

I'm going to write it in PHP, i'm just leaning PHP so for me it might be a fun project. i dont think it will be too hard to write when i figure out the logic of everything. The only part i'm going to have some trouble with is having it input data into a database, thats what i'm learning now.

When i figure out how to get things to display on the calandar and make the input form i could probably add a menu that says how many days in advance you want the event to show up. that wouldnt be hard at all. I cant guarentee that i can get this working but i'm going to try my best. The reason i need it is for a small company me and a team of people are making for a project at my college, we have to have 3 pages for the site using a database in some way to display or store data, so i figured this would be a good way to use that

Hi,
thank you for the offer. I am all for learning projects. and understand that they dont always work, which is why they are called learning. so if you figure something out and then want to share i will be forever grateful. Thank you very much
