Hi. I'm not sure exactly where this problem of mine should be posted. If this isn't the right forum please redirect me to the correct place.

I use FrontPage2000 (I know it's hated, sorry!) and all of a sudden I'm getting an error message and it's not allowing me to upload my site. Here's the error message from the server error log.

[Sun Jul 10 01:55:06 2005] [error] [client 66.249.71.53] File does not exist: /usr/home/visitor/public_html/404.shtml
[Sun Jul 10 01:55:06 2005] [error] [client 66.249.71.53] File does not exist: /usr/home/visitor/public_html/robots.txt

I have a sense that it may have something to do with my blog which is located in the public html.

BTW, I tried uploading my website via ftp. The ftp said it was successfully transferred but when I accessed my page it hadn't been updated. Thinking I might have a problem with cache, I created a new page and ftp'd that successfully (it said). Yet when I attempted to access the page it said the page couldn't be found. I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Any help you can give me on this will be really appreciated.

sounds like a server call error - as in something is asking the server to execute a file somehwere in your domain, but it doesn't exist and so returns the error - what is the page you're accessing? is it a dynamic one??

Thanks for your input. The page is www.Visitors2Customers.com\new1stpage.htm

I don't think it's a dynamic page.

Your URL doesn't work!

You gave: www.Visitors2Customers.com\new1stpage.htm

You should have given: www.Visitors2Customers.com/new1stpage.htm

Simple mistake and one made more times than you would believe.

[Sun Jul 10 01:55:06 2005] [error] [client 66.249.71.53] File does not exist: /usr/home/visitor/public_html/404.shtml

This error seems to indicate that you have a custom error page on your site and it is that that cannot be found. When I took a look and clicked a link I got:
Quote:
The requested URL /free.htm was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
It is the second line of this that would seemingly indicate that your have a custom 404 page, and it is that that cannot be found.

[Sun Jul 10 01:55:06 2005] [error] [client 66.249.71.53] File does not exist: /usr/home/visitor/public_html/robots.txt

This error simply indicates that you do not have a robots.txt file in the root of your site directory. I checked it myself and, no, there is no robots.txt file. This error will occur when your site is crawled by a search robot as it looks for that file in the root of your site to tell it what it may or may not do. Take a look at http://www.searchengineworld.com/rob...s_tutorial.htm for a good tutorial on how to put together a robots.txt file. If you get stuck putting a robots.txt file together go to http://www.webtoolcentral.com/webmas...ile_generator/ and do it online nice and simple

As for your ftp problems, I can't answer those.

Thanks for your help. I created a robots.txt page and ftp'd it but I don't see it on my site (but I do in my ftp program). The place I'd upload it would be www.visitors2customers.com? Is that correct? As I mentioned, ftp program says these uploads are successfully transferred but I can't access them on the web. Any ideas?

I'm baffled as to your ftp problems and I would suggest that your first point of contact should be your hosting provider. They may have a server problem and you will go on kicking around in the dark when they might be able to sort you out nice and easy

The robots.txt file goes into the root of your site, so in your case it would have the url www.visitors2customers.com/robots.txt - and incidentally, it's not there, I just checked. What ftp program are you using?

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, the web host provides the server free as a bonus to another service but doesn't offer support. The ftp program is WS ftp Pro. I use it for my blog entries and it's always worked fine. I couldn't find the robots.txt file either, and as I mentioned, another new page I created and supposedly uploaded couldn't be found either.

I am stymied as to your ftp problems as it's not something I've ever encountered before. I use FlashFXP and can't fault it.

I would still suggest that your problems lie with the host, but as they don't provide support that's not going to be much help. If you have access to another ftp program I would give that a try - you never know.
