I am curious, what makes vBulletin so good? Out of all the forums you guys speak of, they are the only one that charges. I am interesting in starting a forum as well, so I wonder if they are worth the money? And if so, why?
It has a great community and many modifications (not supported) that can make your forum unique.
vBulletin basically allows you to edit everything you need to through a very simple to use, Admin Control Panel. It's what I'm used to and run on my forums and I wouldn't have considered anything else.
Not all people can afford over 100 usd for an owned license ... it's still a good script, no doubt about it.
