SMTP = localhost
smtp_port = 25
; For Win32 only.
;sendmail_from =

i am using an router which acts as a firewall, but by default port 25 is open

If you don't have a mail server running on your localhost, try changing the SMTP to your ISP mail server.
Example: smtp.sbcglobal.net

mail() would send emails but I dont think you can set up port. Just get more advanced mail script and look how it works. there are many on script sites.

If you are on windows you will have to install some mail server. I use argosoft. It is small and freeware.
