Beginning PHP5, Apache, and MySQL Web Development (Programmer to Programmer) (Wrox)
Sams Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL and Apache All in One (3rd Edition) (Sams Teach Yourself)

PHP and MySQL Web Development.

Thats the one book that sent me on my way, I would highly recommend it. That link is to a future 4th edition, but you can still get the 3rd edition.

I will give you a quick review as I currently working on this myself.

Lots of people say buy the Orielly book. I borrowed that one. I did not care for that one. Should be a great reference book but not the best for learning. To much is assumed in the examples and too many things are touched too quickly without real follow through.

Then I bought the WROX book, Beginning PHP5. I am finding this one much easier to sit down and read. The flow of the book and the examples are much easier for me to understand. Each item is introduced in what I consider to be a more logical flow. No CD with this one but you can download the all the examples from their site.

My only prior language was basic many years ago. I have modded a few php scripts by trial and error but never really written anything except simple include and random statements.

I also vote for PHP and MySQL Web Development.

It moves way beyond the "hello world" script and will show you how to create a number of different real-world solutions. A great book.

I would also recommend Beginning PHP5 Apache MySQL Web Development and Beginning PHP5. Both from Wrox. They provide real-world examples that have really helped me.

Then Wrox's Professional PHP5 is excellent for the next level.

When i started learning PHP I bought Professional PHP 4 By WROX. And I have to say that it beat the hell out of most online PHP guides etc.

And the fact that it's called "professional php 4" doesnt mean that they don't go through the basics.

So I would reccomend that you skip the "beginning" series and get Professional PHP 5 by wrox. That way you dont have to read the same stuff twice ( basics etc )
