Hello,
I'm new here, and this is my first post.

The question is slightly different from the usual image hotlinking prevention techniques found out there on the web.

I would like to allow image hotlinking (I run a weblog with thousands of images, and most are hotlinked), but just add a line of code after the image saying for example "view the post at http://domain.com"

The same thing to directly linked images on my webserver: there are several sites that link directly to hi-res images and jpegs: this is useless both for the user and for me: the user will see a big picture without descriptions or other stuff, I loose the website tracking... Is it possible to add the same line of code to the linked images, to get that traffic back to the weblog?

I'm running my website on wordpress on a unix-linux platform, but the hosting provider sucks, and I have not access to nothing: a nice way could be to do it through .htaccess (but I don't know how) or through a file I can upload on the server.

Any advice? Thank youfor the help

I do no belive this is possible.

if im right about what you mean where you want to have links and all that i dont this it can be done, unless the people who are hotlinking to you do something like include a file like photo.php?pic_id=52 which you have show what you want

but if they want to hotlink to the image then they will as you say just getthe high res image with no desc.

all i would say is watermark all YOUR images so when they d without a bit of editing they user can still see the webaddres or what have you.

i know in cPanel theres the hotlink protection, which i think you can have it to allow domains you choose to hotlink
but im guessing you wouldnt have access to that.

Btw: if you would like a better host who would give you full access to the full features and everything of cPanel talk to me im happy to help!
im sure we could arrange soemthing if you want.

Sorry i couldnt be more help.

Dan

If i'm understanding you correctly, you might try setting up a page that has an inline frame. When the image is on another site, instead of linking it to that site, you could display it on your inline frame. This way the user would never leave your site.

Hello guys,
thank you for the quick reply.

With the previous explanation I wanted to mean: if there's the opportunity to add a watermark only to hotlinked images (through .htaccess and a php script) - in this case the watermark should appear just on the images displayed on the hotlinking website, and not on my domain - is it possible to add something like the following:

<br />
<a href="http://domain.com">Domain</a>

or alternatively just link the image to the original website home page?

The direct links to hi-res is another matter, less important, just made to help users to have a better website experience.

Unfortunately I know almost nothing of scripting. Thank you for your great help!

@Flann: I didn't mean iframing the image, just adding some rewrite rules to hotlinked images to do that stuff. Iframing would be very similar to hotlinking, I just could have some more website tracking...

a possible way (and this is just theory that I am coming up with on the fly) by basically just redirect any image files to a server side language file(php) using .htaccess. The use php to render the image with all the extra watermarking.
