In answer to your question.

Yes you should have a good sound knowledge of html before learnign PHP it will make it alot easier.

XML is not a necessity at all for learning either html/xhtml or PHP.

basically i would recomend get a fair kowledge and understanding of html, and then start learning basic PHP and keep working up from there

dansgalaxy is correct, however let me expand on why a little bit. When you write php code, you're for the most part using decision logic to print html, css, javascript to the screen. The users browser never sees any php, nor does it know or care of its existence.

i guess you could not use html but lets put it this way you wouldhave a VERY boring static page
