<rant type="fustrated">
Anyone else get the sense that politics is more about American Idol for Grown Ups than it is about policy? That it's like baseball, but less relevant? Which team is going to win - and get to rape the country for their prize?
Hilary fell behind, so she cried, and then she became the front runner again. Except for that nuke button, how is that any different from Sanjaya?
If the only qualification for being president and the only thing people vote on is personality (cause the pres is nothing but a figurehead?) does it even matter if you vote for Hannity & Colmbs or Steve Jobs & The Woz?

It's becoming the same in Canada. It's less about the issues and more about the strategy and posturing than it ever was. It's a game of chess, and no one wins.
Not only that, we're having a federal election at some point very soon (I'm not sure when, but the campaigning has already started) and we just had a provincial one here in Ontario.

One thing I love about this forum and I guess just the internet in general is the ability to look at views from other countries, I began to see that human nature is true of every where. Having said that it seems we are losing pride, not just in America but as people in general. (I apologize in advance for the illustration I am about to use – lol) I was watching brave heart (again) last night and it made wish that I lived in a time where people took pride in who they are, not about being rich and powerful. Politicians seemingly care less and less about honor and more and more about votes.

The best words of wisdom I can provide for your "Political Apathy" came from the mouth of Bernie La Plante(Dustin Hoffman) at the end of the movie "Hero", as he explained to his son the fundamentals of life. They went something like this:
"But what you learn in life is that there is no truth. Only bull sh*t. Layers upon layers of bull sh*t. And what you do as you grow older is, you pick the layer of bull sh*t that you like, and that becomes your bullsh*t."

American Politics make me want to dress up in a princess leia outfit and sing horribly off key about the war, health care, and the energy crisis.

That's why they're politicians, to get elected, it's what they do.

Ok, it has hit me too. I think it happens when you cant get excited about any of your choices. Giuliani is out, and I am beginning to question whether he was really ever a good choice. Its sad to say, but of the remaining candidates, the one I like the best is Obama . Its too bad his positions so far left, or he'd have my vote. Seriously, drivers licenses for Illegals? Immediate withdrawl from Iraq with no military bases remaining? Raising taxes? Socialized Healthcare?
McCain is so old, it looks like he would die in office, not to mention he is crotchety, pro-life, voted against tax cutting, says "My friends" every friggin sentence, and supports amnesty for illegal aliens.
Romney seems to need to solicit others for his opinions, wants to overturn Roe V Wade, has a questionable fiscal record(IMO) and has run an overtly negative campaign at every step of the game.
Hilary has possibly the ugliest soul of any person on the planet and plans to spend our economy into the dirt trying to relive the Web 1.0 bubble days. Not to mention the dirty feeling having white trash in the white house leaves you with.
I guess at the end of the day, I'll vote Republican for lack of better options (If Bloomberg runs, it'll divide the Republican vote guaranteeing a Democrat victory). Its just so pathetic not to be able to get excited about ANY of the options.
I know this is going to piss most of you off, but I REALLY wish Bush could run for another term. Like him or hate him, the guy doesn't waffle on his beliefs and the State of the Union was awesome. It'll be funny if he gets congress to do any of the things he mentioned as a last year lame duck(I suspect he will, as congress has traditionally played the role of his b*tch).
"I'll veto any bill not reducing earmarks by 50%". Whose going to slander him for that and keep their publicly elected office? Its something I think only a last year, second term president, who wont be endorsing anyone in the general election could say. Funny stuff.

At least you Americans don't wake up every day wondering which of your elected representatives is next to be investigated by either by their peers the police or both. The lack of honour in UK politics has IMO sunk to a new low.

You're right, Aldor. It's not every day one of our pols is investigated - it's not even every month. At least that we hear about. And the truth is, as much as I'd love to say the Democrats are the party of all that's right in the world and the Republicans are entrenched evil, one of the more recent national scandals involved a Dem from the south with more cash than I'll ever see in his freezer.
Power corrupts. I think people (even Republicans) might start out in politics because they want to make the world a better place, but then lobbysts start making offers they can't refuse.
