I really didn't think this poll would end up this close when it first started. I've stated my opinion and the reasons behind my opinion. I don't think that it should be illegal for responsible, law abiding people to have a gun. The gun by itself is no more dangerous than a baseball bat. You can hit someone with it, but without ammunition and some force on the trigger after the ammunition is loaded it's not going to shoot a projectile.
Gun safety training needs to be improved. When my kids took their hunter safety training it was incredibly basic. The test at the end was a joke - you are pretty much given the answers and I've never heard of anyone failing the hunter safety test. My kids learned a lot more from their father and I than they did in that class. Don't get me wrong, parents should absolutely teach their kids gun safety in the home if they are going to own guns, but the safety training they received should have been at least equal to what they had already been taught.
All of that being said, most of the problems around guns are the people that use them. For the most part, crimes are not being committed by people who legally purchase guns, crimes are committed by people who buy the guns off the street. Here in the US, prohibition and Roe v. Wade showed how effective it is to outlaw something that the people consider their right to have. Outlawing guns in the US is simply not a viable option anymore.
