With schools going to pot - should the cane be brought back to schools?

Well that would be an option, but not something I'd opt for. I think a better option would be to put disruptive pupils in the Forces - not necessarily to actually serve in action, but to do learn discipline etc.

Like religion, I think corporal punishment is something that if anybody is going to make that choice for a child, should belong to the parents. Also in our society I don't think being hit as a form of punishment really jives with our idea of human rights.
Remember the kid who was sentenced to 40 (?) lashes with a bamboo rod for spitting gum on the sidewalk?

I'm pretty sure he was in possession of Marijuana in Singapore, a crime punishable by Death. The fine for gum on the sidewalk or littering in Singapore remains 276$ I believe. Still, they got really clean sidewalks......

Exactly. I don't and never have actually beat my kids, but they did get a spanking now and again when they were little. That doesn't mean I want a stranger deciding when their behavior merited a spanking. Schools in NY do not have much discipline authority and use less than what they have. When DarkLink was in 6th grade a teacher told me he sat in class drawing every day, didn't do any work and didn't pay attention. I asked her what she did about it, her response was that she was talking to me. I told her that I could punish him at home, but that wouldn't do her any good in the classroom. She had the option of sending him to the principal's office, detention, etc but opted not to do any of it. He did get grounded and I talked to the principal to have his class changed to a teacher that was a bit more proactive.

I hope my kids arrive at age 18 without ever having received a spanking. I know my kids will never be spanked out of anger. I know I will never tolerate corporal punishment outside of the home (unless they join the military). All that said, I think the PC crowd that gets their panties in a wad every time they hear of a child being spanked, and wants to get Child Services involved, needs to spend some time in review of the U.S. Foster care system and get a grip.

In spanking my children:
1. It was never in anger.
2. It was never more than a quick swat.
3. It was reserved for repeat offenses that were not corrected by other means of discipline.
However, we did have Child Services called on us because my husband turned DarkLinks head to look at him while he received a lecture on misbehaving and his wedding ring caught the corner of DarkLink's eyebrow causing a superficial cut. It scared the heck out of my hubby and the lecture was over. DarkLink went to school the next day and told the teach his dad hit him. No other mark on the kid, no bruise or red mark on his face, just a tiny cut on the edge of his eyebrow. Child Services were at my door by the end of the day. They observed us with the kids on two seperate occasions without notice and talked to both kids separately (which was kind of absurd since my daughter was two years old) and closed the case. Meanwhile there are parents who repeatedly put their children in the hospital and nothing gets done about it.

I got the strap twice at school - once for knocking out a kids tooth - he had jumped on my back and it was in self defense (elbow to the head - worked a treat) - however due to the other kids parent moaning about a thousand dollar dental bill and something had to be done - I got the belt - yes it hurt .
The second time I blew through my book - making a whistling sound - the teacher told me not to do it , so I did again - and I got the belt for DIRECT DISOBEDIENCE
Really pointless reasons to get it - but overall it made me behave at school - cause if I didn't - I knew what would happen.

I would never beat my kid, well, ain't gonna have one anyways, but Im pretty sure that if, if he would be taking drugs or smoke 'em pots, I guess the school is only partly responsible, the most blame should be taken on the parents.

in this day and age people are too liberal to let children be slaped at school. thus the likelyhood of people reintroducing the ridiculous law into society is highly unlikely.

I wouldn't call that being liberal, unless you think of me as liberal. Peoples views on what is effective child rearing have changed. I believe our military schools, which few can argue instill values, discipline, and character, still use varied forms of corporal punishment. Maybe doing push-ups until your hands bleed isn't the same as belting someone, but it is a physical punishment and I imagine the results are very similar.

With an avatar like that, you're as liberal as they come

I mentioned putting disruptive pupils in the Forces earlier in the thread - I didn't mean that it would be better to have children/young people abused in the army instead of at school - but I think there is a certain discipline that army recruits learn and I think this would bring unruly pupils back into line. It doesn't necessarily have to be the army - it could be the cadet force or whatever, as long as discipline is emphasised and the children learn obedience.

This sounds a bit weird but i think the biggest problem is the quality of teachers.
When you have a teacher which can stimulate you and make you excited to learn, it's a fact you learn more you listen more and you be have well because you respect them as a person..
Now i have particular expeirence with this with my science teacher, I understand she has all the knowledge and went to university for 4 years but quite simply she cannot teach.
She lacks the skill to communicate well to young people, her lessons are identical (belive me me and my friend can sit there and say right now she will show a "helpful" youtube video then she will say exactly what the book says... then she will tell us to do question 1-5 )
It fustrates me some what as well at how we are not taught what we will use in later life or what will help us, we are simply taught how to pass exams, we dont learn something because its interesting or useful its because it will get us a mark. - which i think is wrong.
Its a very difficult situation, and really needs improving.
