What is it with the American media (at least Fox and CNN)?

OK I rarely look at the American press as I always find the BBC to be one of the best sources for up to date news and information about both the UK and the World. However, I wanted to gauge what the feeling was among some of the American media about Clinton's hopes to become the Democratic candidate and see if any were calling for her to drop out of the contest (which I think she should...)

Anyway, I was surprised at what I found. The Clinton issue was nothing compared to some of the bizarre news that these 2 companies report. The BBC and largely many of the UK papers/media usually lead with fairly serious stories about topics like crime, the environment or politics, but CNN and Fox seem to have numerous strange, and often comical stories on their front pages - it's hard to take them seriously. A few examples (all taken from the front pages of the sites):

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/05/09/....ap/index.html
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/05/08/vet.segways/index.html
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/05/08/vet.segways/index.html

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,354718,00.html
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,354638,00.html
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,354701,00.html

I've got a sense of humour, but I do find it a bit weird that these large news corporations seem to lead with unimportant news articles. Is this typical of most of the American press, or are CNN and Fox just a bit strange?

The case involves 21-year-old Timothy Caudill, who last year was held in a residential community corrections program in Nelsonville for breaking into a bar. While there, prosecutors say he bought an oatmeal cream pie from a vending machine and shared it with a fellow inmate who wasn't allowed to eat the snack.
Prosecutors in Vinton County asked Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Simmons to revoke Caudill's probation and put him in prison for nine months.
Oh my god, this crime spree Clinton started is getting out of control!! Someone ate a Little Debby snack cake? What is this world coming to? Our crime is so terrible, we need to call in the national guard, and think about just nuking the inner cities. We need another million cops on the street. Longer mandatory minimum sentences. Tax cuts for all!

Gitmo? Iraq? What are you talking about - can't you see there's important crime being committed? Inmates are eating Little Debby's!

Its amazing there were any Lil Debby snacks left in the vending machine considering the quantity of police officers in the vicinity. I think the difference you are seeing is the quantity of content, not the content itself. The Fox page is loaded with content, some headliners, some politics, some nonsense. The BBC home page is quite stark by comparison.
