What do people think about this? There's no denying that it's happening. But is it a problem? What kind of importance and priority does it get? How might we think about solving it? Or, is it the symptom of a larger problem? Maybe both?

Children who eat with their families every night are less fat than children who eat with their families 3 or 4 nights a week, who are less fat than children who never do. As a liberal I think family unity is a good thing, but not something the law has any right to impose. Still, I find it interesting that this mostly conservative idea is true in a further reaching way than any of us ever thought. (Some research shows a correlation between childhood obesity and parental divorce, too.)

The generation being raised today will be the first not only to enjoy a lower standard of living than their parents, but to die earlier in life. Medical problems related to obesity, like heart disease and diabetes, are a tremendous drain on our failing health care system.
