Depends on the person, the gun, and the reason for wanting one.. I got my first "gun" when I was 6 (it was an air powered pellet gun) and I got my first "real" gun at 7 (410 shotgun to go squirrel/rabbit hunting with my dad).. I didn't get my first pistol until I was 23.. Never felt a need to own one until then..
But, as I've said before, I think that gun ownership should be tied to training in the safe use of the weapon..

I had a BB gun when I was about Eight. I had a painball gun when I was a teenager. Never had the desire to own a real one. I do have a folded steel katana though, but that's mostly a decoration for my entertainment center.

I agree with Feydakin -depends on the person, reason for wanting one and the gun itself. Kaity got her first gun when she was 9. She and her great uncle share their birthday and he collects antique guns. She has always shown an interest in them and in shooting target practice. For her 9th birthday her uncle bought her her own .22/.410 youth gun. It was the right size for her, something she enjoys immensely even now although it is too small to hunt with, she was too small to hunt when she received it too. We also ended up keeping it locked up within the first week because she was way too excited about it and insisted on handling it unsafely. In some ways she was ready for it - she could shoot extremely accurately, it was the right size, she appreciated it, but in other ways she was not ready - we had to lock it up because she wasn't mature enough to handle it in a safe manner.

I agree with the above posts as well.. I think if you are giving a kid a gun, it is important to teach them all aspects of gun safety.. maybe have them take a shooting or hunters education course. The same applies if you are an adult getting a gun...
I remeber going out to our ranch with my parent and sitting around while they shot off some rounds with .22s... I must of been 2 or 3... I got my first air gun when I was 8, my first high powered rifle when I was 10, my fist handgun when I was 15 and recently purchased another 9mm so I could get a concealed carry permit... haven't got the permit yet tho... been too busy.
I have a 2 1/2 yr old son who I will some day buy a gun for and teach him proper gun safety. I think it is more important that kids learn about guns and gun safety than it is for them to never be around them... keeping guns away from kids only keeps them curious.. but if you let them experience them in a safe and supervised manner, the curiosity fades.

I am 36 and never had one, and never felt the need for one.
Here in Aust, Guns are banned, unless you have a licence, and you only get a licence if you can justify having one such as selected security jobs, farmer or member of a gun club being the only three I know of.
In order to have a licence, you also need to demonstrate secure storage of them, with bullets stored in a different locked cabinet to where you lock the gun up in.
A good long stint in jail is what you get if you are caught with a gun.

The third one is interesting, a gun club doesn't sound like a good reason to me. I wonder if the Bloods or the Crips could register as gun clubs?

Haha.. So true. Worse yet, you may take your weapon to a place crowded with people and just unleash death and maiming...

I came out of the birth canal holding a gun in my hand; I asked the doc to hand over his timepiece. Yes I was one bad A** baby.
