Do I think that we should be in Iraq and Afghanistan? Not really.
Do I respect and appreciate your willingness to serve in the military? Absolutely.

Britain loves her military, despite what the Daily Mails says. Think back to the Falklands (or for balance, Malvinas), when we were really proud. Living in Colchester, a garrison town, everyone respects them. When 4 died in Afghanistan, the streets were lined with people paying their respects.

Patriotism comes in many forms, and while I have no doubt that many who slander our leadership feel they are being patriotic, there is no greater patriot than the person willing to put their life at risk for his or her country. While I may feel in hindsight the force we threw at Iraq could have been better used other places first(IRAN), getting rid of a despot, securing resources vital to American interests, and fighting *sshole terrorists on foreign soil, rather than our own, are definitely causes I can get behind. I thank god there are people like you who still believe America is a moral country, or a good number of us would be wringing our hands over the next three thousand American people killed by some idiot born in Saudi Arabia and trained in Afghanistan. I'm sure some other small portion of us would say we deserved it.

I do appreciate military, what I don't appreciate are the people behind them, the leaders of countries who orders them on what they should do. What ever nationality of a military, they are just serving their country.. and all of them needs recognition.

I cant imagine how a person gets into it other than being personally driven or economically compromised. I have no doubt it creates an extrodinary perspective on people, emotions, the value of life, the creation of wealth. I am sure there are individuals who are loving and devoted to humanity who are involved, contrarily I am not that naieve to know others who are dead inside will also be involved. I hope you as a person who is reaching out to the world for some feedback can make a decision based on where you wish your energy and drive to go now.Are there things you discovered that could be fed back in to your life as a civilian? Are there ways to create a society you wish to belong to that do not involve returning to the military?
Its so important, I feel, to make decisions knowing you have a choice. Thank you for putting out your question. I hope your life brings you some inner peace.

Of course we all appreciate the risk and sacrifice everybody in the military is taking. It's not your fault GWB sent you off to the desert to protect his buddies' no bid oil contracts.

I'm personally getting a bit tired of the whole 'you don't support the troops!' thing being used as a political tool to make people seem unpatriotic over policy disputes.
People shouldn't have to add as a disclaimer before every criticism that they love our military.
It's not as bad as the John McCain pow/war hero thing though. "All respect to Senator McCain for his service to our country, hes a genuine American hero.. BUT"

If I seem extreme about almost anything, it is this subject.
No, I don't appreciate it to some extent. I'm happy/supportive of the fact that we have a national defense and people willing to "defend" this country, but who doesn't?
I support the military when it acts in the defense of its/a country, which we are clearly not doing. Though it is not your fault that you are fighitng an unjust and criminal war (you did sign up though), you are an individual who doesn't have to do what your are told.
It scares me that so many peopleare willing to fight regardless of the governement's motives because there are many examples throughout history of that leading to disaster.
I can't say for sure because I am not in a "draft", however I think I'd rather be imprisoned for not fighting for a criminal regime ... call me a radical, but philosophically we are all individuals with choices, not Yesmen willing to pull the trigger because some rich politician says so... though perhaps that is the only way the military can work.
If that is the case, then by signing up for the military you sign away your humanity, your soul, your right to choose right from wrong and your consequences for taking lives.

At least, that was the case before GWB was made commander in chief by the supreme court. Now, Highanddry's right to purchase cheaper gasoline than Europe gets ( and Texan oil companies' no bid contracts to extract wealth from Iraq) is protected by people who were lied to, and volunteered wanting to defend our rights. Mission Accomplished!

Thats the attitude! Israel has it right. EVERYONE joins the military for 2 years. Men, Women, Everyone. My understanding is you keep you take your assault rifle home with you when you on being discharged!
