I asked, because I've started doing it a lot recently (been at a really lively Christian youth festival). It's obviously symbolic - i.e. raising Christ on high and exalting Him above yourself, or opening yourself up to Him, but I did a bit of research on Google and there are some people who discourage the practice, which I thought was a bit strange. Biblically, there is little/no basis for raising your hands in worship, at least in the New Testament. Of course, there are other sites that encourage everyone to worship freely and openly and do what ever they want, guided by the Holy Spirit.
The whole issue of how we worship God is an interesting one too. Personally, I think God doesn't mind how we worship Him as long as we are doing it sincerely and not just because everyone else is doing it.
