I was just explaining to my daughter about the pilgrims, and the meaning of thanks giving and it struck me that the Pilgrims were a highly religious (Christian) group of people, many of whom left Europe to flee religious oppression. It got me thinking that the significantly Christian origins of this holiday may be offensive to the large Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, and Atheist populations in America. They may get the idea we are shoving religion down their throats by the repetition of such stories. Besides the story takes attention off of the well documented atrocities this country committed against the native Americans, such as the trail of tears, diseased blankets, the slaughter and relocation of their population, and the theft of their properties.
We really need to either change the story of thanksgiving to focus on how we should chastise ourselves as a nation for our crimes while at the same time increasing the minority status of native Americans to include anyone having 1/64th native American ancestry, and zone the property of having such status as "Reserve"(regardless of when said property was acquired by said native American), thereby qualifying for construction of casinos. Either that or we could rename the holiday to "Late Fall Holiday" or something like that.
Happy Late Fall Holiday everyone.
