I couldn’t stop laughing for almost a half hour yesterday when I saw the “Shoe throwing” video in which an Egyptian “Reporter” threw a shoe at President Bush in a surprise press conference held in Bagdad. I thought President Bush was a perfect example of American flexibility and agility as he deftly avoided the well aimed throw. According to CNN, there are many who have made the shoe throwing “Reporter” a hero, calling for his immediate release. It got me to thinking about what the fate of that “Reporter” should be.
I’m fairly certain a person in the U.S. hurling a shoe thusly at another person in the U.S. in front of a Police officer, could be held on felony assault, a charge carrying a potential sentence of a few years in the joint. Of course the maximum charge and sentence would likely not be used in the case of such an incident happening between two private citizens. I suspect that if such an event were to take place at the U.N., with a U.S. reporter hurling a shoe at any foreign leader creating a international incident, we would likely prosecute that reporter to the full extent of the law.
Unfortunately, with radical elements stirring sentiment to protest the holding of this man(much like the protesting of certain Danish cartoons), letting the law prevail may come with consequences for President Al Maliki. What do you think? What should happen, and what will happen?
