Nobel Prize for Obama... (?)

I was - let's say: quite - surprised hearing, that Barrack Obama had won a Nobel Prise.
I know, that the Nobel Committee is drifting towards Americans lately (no offence there, really), but as for now they've been giving the award for things, that had been done already.
This time it's looks like president Obama had been awarded for pure intentions of doing something - just after a few good speeches... I mean - he didn't exactly done anything towards the World Peace yet, did he?
Or am I missing something here?
ps.
I've just spotted, that I placed it in general thread, whereas it's more likely to be in Politics subforum... Can it be move by moderator, please?

Got you covered, it's moved.
Obama would be the third US president, I believe, to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson being the other two. I could've seen Carter winning it, but not Obama. For crying out loud, aren't we still at WAR?

I lot of people here in the US were quite shocked at this Nobel Peace Prize for Obama, Michał. As far as I am concerned I guess I am missing something here too, the reasoning behind this is what I don't understand; good intentions or future good intentions has been circulating around for being awarded this prize, doesn't exactly mean accomplishments in the future.

One of the comments I encountered lately was, that by giving the Prise to Obama, the Committee is trying to force Him to lower the number of army forces, that can be send to Iraq - because there's no way for the guy that won the Nobel Peace Price to send more army anywhere.
I didn't see it that way before...

Though indeed it is good news for the US citizen as well as for Mr. Obama himself it is a great achievement but personally I feel that it is too early to judge him appropriate candidate for this prestigious award.

I remember seeing a clip of Limbaugh telling his listeners that the world was laughing at Obama with this nobel prize, which I don't think is true. I actually thought the sentiment behind it was nice, though blatantly politically motivated. And I do agree that perhaps it's a little premature.
Still, you can't knock someone who's just won a prestigious award like that. Congrats Obama, enjoy it and live up to it!

The guy just escalated the war in Afghanastan (probably didn't spell it right - don't care) by sending 30,000 more troops. Is this the way we award people that send troops off to war???
This is crazy. Haven't this country learned what happened to the Russians when they attacked the same country in 1980??? Sure - they took over the country - but could never get rid of the rebels. The Russians gave up after losing many lives and wasting a lot of money.
Also - The mountainous territory is impossible to defeat the Taliban.
This is another Vietnam!!!

I like Obama and voted for him. I think he's doing the right thing by sending more troops into Afghanistan. But it's appalling that they would award a Nobel peace prize to a wartime president that is after all acting not purely for peace, but what he feels is the best interests of the country. Way too premature for such an honor.

He has not done anything to deserve the Nobel peace prize, and i think everyone basically knows it, and their are hundreds of other people out their that deserved that honor more than him.

Then again, after watching excerpts of his speech to the Nobel committee, I'm glad he got it. It wasn't what they expected; I think they were used to more lofty rhetoric. He told them he was morally justified in fighting a war to kill terrorists who would never be convinced to lay down arms through negotiations, just as non-violent resistance would never have stopped Hitler's armies.
It's still premature to give him a peace prize however.

His election as the first black US president is a very notable achievement, but worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize? I think not.
I am confident that Obama will, in his presidency, carry out actions worthy of such an accolade, however prizes should never be awarded on speculation.

Meh, I wouldn't call it another Vietnam. The number of casualties suffered by the coalition in the middle-east right now pales in comparison to that of Vietnam.

What did he get a Nobel Prize for? he did not end any wars or bring any bitter enemies to end their feud.
all he did was make a few speeches that did not help and statements that in my opinion has made things worse.
is there a prize for that

Watching Obama's acceptance speech in Norway was just, well, ..... delicious. He followed it up by snubbing the traditional dinner with Norwegian royalty. Hopefully he donated the check to a worthy charity..... like Acorn.
