Is it possible to have a server at home and host your own websites or will your ISP not let you?

its suposed to be relatively easy to do but id advise against it

1 - youd need your computer on 24/7
2 - you would need a huge amount of badwidth which i doubt youll get from your isp (even bandwidth will struggle)

you really are best outsourcing the hosting to a professional hosting company

Yes it is possible if you have a static IP address, but as was said many ISP's won't allow it. Verizon is a large ADSL provider in the US that prohibits it, to name one. But if your ISP allows it and you like tinkering with servers, playing with firewalls and fighting off cyber attacks then go for it. But I don't think you'd like the performance of a home-hosted site.

The best advice:

Of course I don't want you to home host.

But if you must, switch to Earthlink DSL. They won't block you.

How old am I? Old enough to want to change the subject.

The first Web server I set up was with Netscape Commerce Server Beta in the early 90's. It cost over $1,000, ran on Windows, came with no documentation and was really gross.

We use DSL in the office to connect our PC's, as does the remote staff. Our hosting servers are all Linux, housed in multiple data centers with BGP4 (multi-homed) and GigE fiber connections. We use all the big carriers for bandwidth.

For competitive reasons I don't discuss the details of our client base. We're a small outfit but suffice it to say we have a lot of customers, from good-sized companies down to a few bloggers we host for free.

Don't mean to make this sound like a sales pitch (well, maybe just a little ) -- but you asked.
