Anytime there's an opportunity, I like to express my opinion on popups:
1) I am less likely to revisit sites with popups
2) I am less likely to do business with sites with popups
3) A majority of the content I find on popups is offensive or useless.
4) If I want to find something, I'll use Google.
5) Please don't use popups. Instead focus on building a great site and people will support you.

I'm sure many would love to discuss the virtues of popups. This might even lead to you being considered a good authority on the subject. By providing good information people would be likely to visit your site via the signature.
Speaking only for myself, when the first post is an advertisement, it kind of rubs me the wrong way. But if you took the time to get involved, your posts would command a higher level of respect. I hope you will not be discouraged, but instead, join us!

What kind of payout do these popup companies offer anyway?
Have there been any studies on ROI (Return on Investment)?
Finally, if you add popups to your site, how do these companies guarantee:
1) the popups won't try to install software?
2) link to pornography?
3) attempt to collect information for spamming people?
In what situations do you feel popup ads are appropriate?

This is a lot of questions...maybe others might provide insite also.

i can answer your questions on behalf of 48hr.com:

Every sign up is checked to be sure that there are no possible harmful or over distracting 'features' within the site.

As for the Pornography, we make sure that it stays in its own genre. Meaning that only Adult sites will display Adult popups. This goes the same with all of the categories offered at 48hr.com.

In regards to information collection, the only information that a site can collect from you is that which is transfered through the Enviromental Variable (your previously visited site, browser, os, resolution, ect.) It displays the entire webpage, just like a unique view.

I feel that popunders are great for those that are starting a new site. You have the opportunity to double your traffic with 0 out of the pocket. In fact, if you throw in a splash of marketing know-how you can increase click-through % greatly. (Let me know if you need assistance in that area.)

As far as ROI, since there is no cost, I guess you could say that the ROI % is 100%!

I noticed that all three of the sites in your signature have a 0 page rank in Google. How long have these sites existed? The only reason I ask is because I know that traditional techniques like copyrighting and link exchanges really work, but they do take longer. Popups always worry me because I want a 'classy' feel to my site, and I know popups can be annoying, but am tempted to set up a free hosted site and popups to educate myself. Do free hosted sites ever include referal URLs in the server log reports? That way I can test the effectiveness.

At 48hr.com you are dealing with PopUnders. So if you visit the page nothing comes in obstruction of the visitors view. The window is generated behind the active window. These are much more subtle and actually have more effect due to the fact it often times catches the visitor off guard. They are more inclined to look into something that they are not sure where it came from.

As far as tracking from a free site . . .
You can use a program like http://www.servustats.com
I believe that does referral tracking. If not you may set up a free account at http://www.hypertracker.com and monitor up to 3 campaigns I believe.

In Regards to my sites placement. AHits.com is not new. but has never been submitted, until yesterday that is. The others are new indeed. I used a program by the name of AdWeb to submit my sites, anyone have any opinions on this software?

Welcome CMTD and I do hope you stick around.

However, on the topic of pop ups, pop unders etc. I really don't like them and I have software on my PC to block them. I use it anytime I am surfing.
