Just reading forums, there's so much info that I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. And this is just th public info no one cares about, actually learning how to do it is tough because no one wants to give out their secrets haha

Actually, the sole and and only thing that you have to know is "hard work and improvment".
This is the secret. Try and try and try, over and over again. Experiment stuff and you'll find the way that suits you best and produces the best results for you.

I learned by reading webmaster forums for multiple years without really posting myself. I just ate the knowledge others had.
During that time I experiemented with my own projects, most of which weren't anything good but it helped me learn, which was the key point.

Go to your local library or bookstore to the business section and just browse, pick up a handful of books and bring them home and read. Read magazines, Business 2.0, Inc., Entrepreneur. Newspapers, the Wall St. Journal is a good one.

Well said, those that limit themselves only to forums are only holding themselves back.

I've learned from watching the family businesses and their strengths, weaknesses, successes, and failures. And then I learned some of the technical aspects of my current site at an old job.
Combining those two with a passion for the subject and a little bit of photography talent landed me in my current site.

So how did you learn?
Did you visit forums (like this and others), have a mentor of sorts?

I can't remember how I caught on to the idea of monetizing a website... I started doodling in web dev so to say a few years ago and picked up on the idea. I've learned by screwing things up and then trying to fix it, just jumping in and giving it a go, trial and error, experimentation... and it has been a lot of fun! Resources: webmaster forums, ebooks, blogs, etc.
I wish I had a mentor or even a good direction for a formal education (not that my budget would allow anyway! but it would be nice to ponder)

I learned mainly through business related websites and message boards. They have alot of informative and helpful articles. I did alot of the research myself, and recently got back into website development. Due to school and my job, I had no time to maintain any website. Now that it's the summer, I have more time to work online. I'm aiming to make at least $3000+ per month online.

I got a great jumpstart by reading through Website Publisher's guide to building a successful website. It's a great resource for people interested in building profitable content websites.
Other than that, I try to keep up with things by reading foums, blogs, websites, and magazines.

I just applied for Adsense and went from there, using ideas I saw on sites that made money, and avoiding ideas from sites that didn't.

I mostly learn from forums and through trial and error. I'd love to have a mentor though.

I started out playing with HTML... well ironically I learned it from Monster.com ... they used to have Video Training for a few topics, one being HTML. Then I kept building websites for myself, friends, family, etc for free and got pretty good. So, I started learning PHP back in 2003.. stopped learning... started again lol.. I learned from Books, forums, trial and error and also Video Tutorial sites like vtc.com ... videos always helped me learn more for some reason. But, I'm always reading on Sitepoint, etc... which is how I found this site.

I started out with HTML and programming courses in college. From there I built hobby sites. I've bought tons of books. I tend to be somewhat slow on the uptake, but once I have it down, I usually do very well. I think that's why I've spent 9 years doing all of this and only recently figured out I am going about it all wrong from a monetizing, SEO aspect.
But that is changing.
I didn't see it mentioned, but I love audiobooks and podcasts. Just a few minutes ago, I subscribed to a bunch of WebmasterRadio podcasts and I plan on adding Lee's show. I also listen to audiobooks like Rich Dad, Poor Dad, personal wealth management and building a business. I don't have time to read books, but I drive 2-4 hours a day for work, so this seems to be working out very nicely.
