Making money with blogs

For those of you with blogs, how do you go about making money with them? I know I can just set up WordPress and start writing - but what are the steps taken to ensure money will start rolling in once the blog kicks off?
I want to start a few blogs within my interests (I've tried before and failed) so I'm just seeing what everyone's experiences and such are.

Pretty much all of the same ways as a regular website. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket and diversify.

Yeah, that can happen... when certain "effects" push these threads down. :shuriken:

SEO, Metrics and AdSense are the keywords for me...
Put up AdSense and experiment with it and track everything via website statistics (big Google Analytics fan here).
And of course use some good old SEO and a lot of content to get a lot of visitors

Firstly, know your niche. Being very targetted will help you build good content and eventually get enough readers to make money.
Best methods I've found are text link ads, Adsense, affiliate programs and I'm making a little off CPM through Burst Media. It can take time to build up sone traction with traffic though.

So, in anyones opinion, is blogging a feasible way of making money?
Since I am a newbie, and needed switch gears, which direction would you look? Should I do a landing page? A website?

Even though I have never had much experience with blogging for money I know for a fact that you have to be very very patient. Alot of people are not patient enough and quit but if you keep going at it you will earn and continue to earn more if you don't stop.

Blogging can be a good way to earn money, but I have to counsel that you have to be patience and you have to be focused. More importantly, to really gain the traction and traffic you'd need to make your blog revenue stream meaningful, you also have to get involved in the overall blogosphere, not just produce your own content and wait for people to show up.
I have three blogs that I run, and they produce $xx,xxx monthly for me through a combination of AdSense, Text-Link-Ads, Adzaar, and a variety of other monetization techniques.
But make no mistake, it's a job, and it's a lot of work. I put in 1-3 hours every day writing new content, reading other blogs, adding comments, and researching material, etc.
Oh the other hand, it's really fun, straightforward, and a great way to gain visibility and become a "guru" in your marketplace, if that's of interest to you.
I actually have a course on business blogging that I created with SEO wizard Brad Fallon and we have an entire 75 minute phone call talking about how to monetize your weblog efforts. If you want to check it out, go to Blogsmart.com.

pROBLOGGER.NET!
You can
a) sell Advertising. plenty of solutions, including adsense, ypn, CPM, etc.
b) become an affiliate
c) use the blog as a portfolio site and make money because of it, rather than through it. approach it like a web designer. show you know what you're doing, and refer potential clients to it. it's what i'm doing with my city seo blog, and having success too. what's great is that if it's just a showcase, traffic isn't a huge concern.
d) sell your own products through the blog
e) use the blog to build up a newsletter, and sell advertising in, or products through, the newsletter. of course, make it more than a commercial. include helpful content.

I have started blogging a few months back with a blogger account, and just this June, I have braved up and bought a domain for my beauty blog.. Nothing beats the freedom of knowing and dictating how your site would look like! I'm loving every minute of my blogging experience, even if I'm just new to the game.
I'm loving it so much that I wish I had like 10 pairs of hands to write more content! I wish I'd be a problogger one day that all I'd do everyday is blog, blog, and blog! haha
To make money in blogs....well, I have noticed that most bloggers and netrepreneurs in this forum focus more on SEO, electronics, and e-commerce. I think it's pretty profitable there, so I'd suggest to blog about those stuff. I want to convince myself to blog about those stuff, but I'm afraid I'd bore myself to tears since I almost fell asleep reading SEO for Dummies. I was just trying so hard to learn, but I think I learned alot, and I also realized that I can't blog about that. With non-tech blogging , I'm not sure if it's profitable, but it definitely is my passion, so I guess for non-techy bloggers, all we need is patience, and enough determination to "make our voices heard". Eventually, I hope, cash inflow would occur! haha

Hey Charisma,
Just checked out both your blogs. Love what you've done. I have an idea for a blog on a completely different topic, but may takes notes on how you've designed yours.
Thanks for the inspiration!
