Does traffic = money?

Okay, so here's my question, and a simple one at that. Does traffic equal money? If I can get a high number of uniques a day will I get good return? I know it depends on things like the click through rate, but I was wondering your thoughts.

In the general sense of things, traffic generally equals money. Your niche will ultimately play the biggest factor in the amount of money you make along with how well you can convert those visitors into clicks/sales, etc.

I'd say usually yes. But for my proxies, the more traffic means I need lots more bandwidth and processing power, so more expensives.

Usually this is the case, however sometimes it is not. I have a few more popular websites that make less than other sites of mine with 1/5th the traffic. Its all about how well you can convert the traffic.

More traffic is always better than less traffic, but targetted traffic is best.

Overall I would say yes. As long as you place the right type of ad, in the right place.

Depends on the types of ads you run. I see some people that rely completely on adsense, and depending on the type of site, this could be a losing effort as traffic increased.

That said, in most cases, more traffic = more money, it is just up to you to figure out how to do it.

Before I start a site, advertising comes into play. That doesn't mean I immediately start running ads on the site, but I evaluate the niche and make sure I am fairly comfortable in my ability to increase my profit as the site grows.

It all depends on how much you pay for the traffic versus how much revenue the traffic produces. It's easy to spend money like a madman on PPC and have nothing to show for it. If you're getting a negative ROI then you need to eventually try a different traffic source.

Good point, and a point that I forgot to consider.

I have never spent much money on PPC traffic or many other forms of advertising other than during a site launch, so for me, the cost of the traffic is usually a mixture of my time, and hosting cost.

it's even the philosophy of Google and one of the 9 principals of innovation:
Quote:
8. It's users, not money
Get the users/visitors in, and there'll always be a way to make money out of that

That is my thought. If you can get the traffic, it is just a matter of time before the money follows.

Pretty much. There are some niches where you can have massive traffic but low income simply due to geographical reasons, age, etc, but in general: more traffic = more money.

Hehe, I know people with HUGE traffic that don't make very much.

In my opinion, whats most important is your ad placement.
In one of my sites, I was making a little under $1 per unique/day, but the site had horrible traffic lol.

Of course, traffic can never hurt, but you can still make a decent amount of money with relatively small traffic.

Not if you have ads that don't interest your visitors or in good places.

I left that out as I thought it would be obvious.

Well I don't think ad relevancy is obvious. I think people need to analyze the main type of audience their site receives, then target the ads towards them, even if its not the same thing as your site is about.

i think it has to do with the niche and your demographics. The goal isn't just to concentrate on traffic you need to do everything possible to turn guests into active members. i know its easier said than done but that's the goal. the more active members the more money will flow in the long run.
