What is your rule of thumb when displaying ads? Do you show several ads on each page, 2-3 ads, or limit yourself to one ad per page?

How do you think multiple advertisements effect your ratio of return visitors?

I limit myself to 2-3 ads per age. Anything over that is too much for me.

It guess it all depends on how well you can blend them in. I know of a few websites that are almost nothing but ads but somehow appear to have almost none. I've also seen others with only one or two that seemed cluttered and overwhelmed. If you use affiliate text links, you can usually stuff in way more ads than if you use banners. Sometimes you can use a combination where the banner helps motivate people to click on the text link. You just need to test.

The amount of ads I use is dependent on how obtrusive they may be. If the ads are less noticible, I will use more, if they are flashy and annoying, I will use only a few.

At what point does the blending become "deceptive" or "dishonest"? We are all here to make money, but is this the best way, or is it better to make your money off of visitors over the long haul by keeping them around and not tricking them?

I wouldn't concider it "tricking" them necessarily. I mean, I assume the user actually reads the text before clicking it.

I think its perfectly fine and a great way to earn money, it does keep up. I have one site using more deceptive adverts whos traffic is 85-90% return. So as to keeping them around, they do come back apparently Other than that, I'm not sure what to say.

I know of a informational website that is almost all ads but the ads ARE the content people are looking for.

When you pick up a magazine about Digital Cameras... You are hoping to see good ads as well as informative articles. Some of the best articles are actually ads as well. This is a good thing because it's what you expected and wanted.

If the people who come to your website "Want" ads... Give it to them.

Personally, I've never used more than 3 on any given page, but its simply because I haven't had enough content to ad more.

I would put as many as I want without detracting too much from the site.

The amount of ads I use completely depends on what I plan to do with the site. If I really want to keep visitors, sometimes I have no ads. Other times, I have one to two ads. And if I really want to make money, I completely submerge the content with ads.
