Like - if you sell things on your site should you still place third party ads?

I wouldn't place an advertisement on my site if it competes directly with my products.

Then what if I targetted the ads to something else?

I think it's fine if it complements your products. There's really no rule against placing ads on your business website but if it competes with your product, then that's not really a smart move. Also, it might be a problem for you if potential a customer to your business gets turned off by the advertisements. It'd be up to you to decide what you think is best.

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to want to put ads on my site once I open it, especially since the ads don't open in a new window.

Thanks

On ForumShock - I have 468x60 ads placed at the top, and text links on the left. I only accept sponsors whom I feel will benefit my users - it is more for resources then for actual pocket money.

It also depends on what you sell and the actual page inside the site I guess. If you're about to make a sale you wouldn't want the user to get distracted by an add and click away..

You could think of a partnership with another service or product. But putting something like Google ads on your business website wouldn't really look professional

In my honest opinion, I think that having advertisements on a businnes web site often takes away from that which is already there. The only time advertisements are a good thing is if you really need money, or if you get enough hits to actually benefit greatly from the revenue. I often think that advertisements take down a business image.

Saying this, I have advertisements on my design portfolio www.pyropixel.com simply because I have a lot of tutorials on there, and I get a lot of traffic to my tutorials. That's one of the main reasons for the advertisements is the tutorials. Besides, I don't really do design that much any more as a freelancer for other people because I find that I make more money working on my own sites.

I would say no - I don't have ads on my sites that sell products or services.
