How much impact does the design have on a website? A friend of mine advertised his website without even modifying his default template. His template was very plain and used on many other websites too. Even though his design wasn't good, he advertised his website, and received more than 70,000 members!

I actually keep my sites very plain and almost ugly. The fewer outbound links the better.

That improves CTR.

There was a great article that made the rounds in the webmaster forums about ugly websites generating big bucks. The prime example used was PlentyOfFish.com (which makes $10k/day from adsense). I'll see if I can dig up the article...

Interesting article, thanks for the link! I still think that the design needs to be good, but simple, and easy for users to navigate.

I think it depends. Design plays a major role in conversion, but that doesn't mean you have to have a fancy design for the site to be succesful. Often, it's the other way around.
