I am replying this thread just after reading Lee's first post, I have been only a READER to many admin boards till now and trying to increase my knowledge in online businesses, before registering on this board i was just reading diff posts and i am impressed by the work people did and thats make me a member of earners forum.
I have been taught many good things by my boss and in that one important thing was "earn earn and earn...but in a right way" thats what lee thinks and i appreciate it, i hope positive with earners forum community.

yup read through your note Lee. yes i too had to go through lots of sites ovr a couple of mths altogether just to compile a couple of sites that end up actually paying and do not take any money as investments.
really it is scary the way scam is going on. rule of thumb is dont pay any site before you earn from that particular site

I don't intend to sound negative for it's own sake, accept my apologies if it does, but a smidgen of honesty here from someone who's been making a living (not a lot but a living) with websites and SEM for several years now...

If you want to make a living on the web, you need to help business people who are not good with these internet tubes and become their webguy - creating their sites (fulfilling their dream), managing the sites (if they will agree to pay you to do so), whilst actively promoting the success of these websites and what they sell as if it were your own (SEM, whatever you wish to call it).

You need to have both brains and the skills (accrued through hard work) to do those things. I'm sorry, but you need those and if you aren't going to get them save your energy for offline endeavors.

This idea that someone sits in front of their computer and decides they are going to make a bunch of money all by their lonesome with some gimmicky ideas, or domain speculation and such, combined with poor web development skills, is just silly. If you want to make money, go where the real money is and _get into real business_, your businesses and the businesses of others, not gimickery and fishing for rubes. Sell real things if you are going to sell things, not huckster download "books" and such.

If you are going to sell for yourself you need a supply of customers, they don't just come 'cause you build it. Who supplies the customers? That's the key question in every single endeavor. Why buy from you instead of someone else? You need a supplier of customers.

It's a tough one. If you can't develop a specific answer to that question you'll probably want to do something else with your money and energy.

One answer, already mentioned: You build, manage and promote sites for successful small businesses who neither know how nor have the time to do it themselves. If your internalized 24/7 goal is to make THEM money with YOUR brains & skills, then you will indeed make a living with the internet and never be entirely out of work.

I have an interesting little tidbit to add, Lee - I've been a legitimate earner for many years, although at some point things went wrong for me and my business just evaporated and I gave up trying, got a job, discovered that life sucks outside the internet and was a lost cause.

Then when I lost my job for being too free-minded and ended up rebuilding from scratch, one of the many routes to wealth I stumbled on was "adsense arbitrage" where I bought clicks from adwords, sold em on to adsense and earned 150 to 800% ROI off it.

Google banned me, then insisted it wasn't for arbitrage (even though that's the only thing I'd done differently in the period up to when I got banned) and even said that they wouldn't tell me specifically why they banned me for "security reasons" (and I checked, legally they are actually MEANT to tell me, but I let it pass).

Anyway. I didn't try and go back and do more arbitrage (I know they were lying when they said that was NOT the reason for banning me - I read up on the various type of ban letter and I know my ban was for arbitrage and that Google know it's a grey area legally so can't admit it), nor did I try to sue them (as my legal advisor strongly recommended) - I just got on with my work and I seem to be back on track with my original business.

But here's the twist - I have noticed many people saying google's adsense revenues are dropping like flies in a fly-spray testing lab, and moreover I know that google's adrevenue growth has crashed totally in the last 12 months. And what I realise is that if I had been able to carry on with the arbitrage and earn the 10,000 dollars a month I was rapidly racing towards, then by now I'd have SO MANY expenses I'd have taken on in my life which, with the imminenty and already-started collapse of Google's adsense revenue zone, would have become underfinanced and I would have gone, once again, rapidly in the direction of receivership.

So I feel 'saved' by the fact that Google was so unscrupulous in removing me.

I spoke on the phone to adwords people who said that google would NOT ban me for arbitrage, but there was no way at all to speak on the phone to adsense and they did not reply to my email queries other than the initial appeal, in which they just said "we can't tell you why you were banned" pretty much, which IS illegal and against Trade regulations in Britain, whether or not their Dublin office would be easy to take to court.

I think it's a VERY big lesson in what 'good' and 'bad' money are, on the web. There is a lot of strength in decent, honest money making and in times of a stockmarket crash and economic collapse it is the honest money which lasts the longest. Anyway, that's my 93cents. Been up for a couple of hours (since 7am) working hard. On with my day. Hope this post is in keeping with the plot of this thread!

Is there a book somewhere out there that explains the detailed difference between black hat and white hat SEO?

I hear so many blogs talking about it but no one ever mentions specific tactics that are considered black hat. I would like to know if I am doing black hat if at all because I don't want to hurt my reputation.

Well, I think that a single word sums it up: honesty.

However if you are STILL in doubt (i.e. you're not sure about the meaning of honesty) here's a good yardstick:

if you feel guilty about what you're doing, you're using black hat.
