I've heard of other ways of evaluating difficulty. an seo i respect puts the "keywords in quotation marks" like so. He'll go for it if there are 100,000- sites returned.
I also like to see under 10 million sites returned in google without quotation marks.
I also consider the sources of competitors links. I have a tool that shows edu and gov links. Lots of em tells me to forget the niche (or charge more  ).
as to keyword arbitrage, does anyone do that with adwords? I.e., buy ads to get clicks on higher paying ads.
On a related note, I'm an affiliate for an SEO informational material... any keywords you guys could recommend?
