What's the dumbest online business idea that made a person rich that you know of?

My pick would be either SantaMail or disposable underwear

I just pisses me off that people get rich with dumb ideas like that. Anyone could have thought of them.

I would say http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com. I could have thought of this idea too.. pixels for sale. I saw this website when there were barely any pixel ads. Now look at what it's become! I would have never thought that people would actually purchase pixels for advertising.

Shan, I'm with you. What a gimmick. The "Pet rock" of the internet.

Yeah, that kid really had a dumb idea that worked. Paul Hartunian selling Brooklin Bridge years ago kind of reminds me what this guy did. It was brilliant PR idea, however.

Guess that makes me vote #4 for milliondollarhomepage.com

Someone on DN forum sold a portfolio of 20-some-odd typos of that domain for $x,xxx

"Dumb online businesses that made millions?" => isn't that an oxymoron?

Have to agree with the milliondollarhomepage thing. Kudos to the guy for getting it to work, but people are holding him up as some kind of genius in marketting which I dont think is accurate.

I didn't - and I still dont - think its a great idea. Once the "cat is out of the bag" as it were, thats the idea dead a burried as the initial flurry of excitement is over and it wont be repeatable. Notice how a lot of people are trying to emulate the success of it (pixels and keywords etc), but nothing has captured the attention the original has got.

If the guy can come up with something else equally as successful then maybe I'll eat my words, but I think he just got lucky really. I'd have loved to have got the idea first, but then I love money

It is. But hind vision is always 20/20. What I meant to say was ideas that seemed dumb, but worked. Is this better? As I read that blog about unusual business ideas (UncommonBusiness) I just kept shaking my head - poop scooping millionaires, geese chasing millionaires.
