Any experienced Joomla users here care to lend a helping hand?

I'm trying to determine what template/extention/module/glass slipper to use for a site I've been thinking of starting. The general theme of the site is going to be a directory of suppliers to a certain niche industry.

I need joomla to basically allow me to add these supplier listings to various categories as I receive them. The main pages for each category will show the name of each supplier, a brief blurb about them, and a hyperlink to their individual page with contact info, etc.

Any suggestions?

If it's just a directory I wouldn't use Joomla, total overkill. There's a good little directory component but I found it had far too many bells and whistles and turning them off was a nightmare.

I use the free version of wsnlinks for my directories (see the vote for link in my sig) - it has templates and is totally modifiable.

I do use Joomla though and it's great - but you have to pick the right software for each job.

How SEO-friendly have you found wsnlinks to be?

Rob,

I use Joomla for a directory site. I found the standard directory scripts to lack the content features of a CMS.

I use a Joomla component called Mosets Tree. It costs $99 and the support is terrible, but the software is great. If you can do a little HTML and PHP, you can really customize it.

Check out the Radio Station db for an example of what it can do.

Again, keep in mind, I had to work a little harder with this, but I think it's way beyond a standard Link Script.

Hi Rob, you could try the Alphacontent component for Joomla which works quite well for me. It'll basically list all content from your sections/categories into a directory style page.

Thanks guys. I haven't had a chance to research any of these because my internet at home is still out from the crazy weather we've been having. Can't wait to check these suggestions out, though.

It depends on how complex script do you want. I worked on mosDirectory component for Joomla, but only in trial version. You could try out and if you'r satisfied, may order some.

I'm very interested in Mosets Tree at this point, though not too excited about paying $100 for it. Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to edit themes/templates for Joomla? I've done lots of Wordpress and MovableType themes in the past and those were pretty easy.

Rob,

It's actually quite easy once you figure out how it's put together. Going through their forums helped me figure out what I needed to know. From there, it's either HTML or PHP customization.

Heck, I even made a plugin for it by taking another plugin, cutting out what I didn't need and tweaking it slightly.

If you can do HTML and some PHP, then you will be fine.
